A GPS pet tracker uses satellite positioning and a mobile network (often LTE Cat‑M1 / 4G with a built-in SIM) to show where your animal is beyond Bluetooth range. A Bluetooth tag that only pings nearby phones is not a GPS tracker, even if the packaging says "tracker". This guide sticks to cellular GPS devices and the subscription rules that come with them.

The short version

  • Expect a subscription. Hardware without an active plan does not provide live tracking.
  • Check size and weight limits from the manufacturer – especially for cats and small dogs.
  • Coverage depends on partner mobile networks, not magic. Rural gaps exist.
  • Cat-specific GPS listings that met our internal rating bar were scarce on Amazon UK when we checked; the shortlist below is dog-focused with clear notes.

GPS vs Bluetooth – say it plainly

Cellular GPS trackerBluetooth tag
RangeNetwork-dependent; designed for escapes beyond the houseNearby phones / crowd-find networks
Ongoing costSubscription for SIM/dataUsually none (or platform fees)
Typical useLive map, virtual fences, longer-range findKeys/bags or last-seen nearby

If a listing boasts "no monthly fee" and only Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi finding, it is not a substitute for a GPS collar device.

Subscriptions and coverage (manufacturer sources)

Tractive

Tractive's help centre states that trackers need an active subscription, that DOG 6 is aimed at dogs from about 4 kg, DOG 6 XL at larger dogs above about 20 kg, and CAT 6 Mini / CAT Mini at cats from about 3 kg, with collar length ranges listed for cat models (Which tracker is right for my pet?). The UK is on Tractive's officially supported country list; devices use LTE Cat‑M1 with 2G fallback where available (Where does Tractive work?). Plan prices vary by term and tier (Basic vs Premium features such as longer history and worldwide roaming) – check the live plan page at purchase/activation rather than relying on a copied price.

Pawfit

Pawfit states that its trackers send GPS data over mobile networks and that a subscription covers embedded-SIM data; each tracker needs its own plan (Pawfit subscription overview). Pawfit 3 is listed for use in the UK, Europe, North America, Middle East, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, South Africa and Australia, subject to mobile signal (Where can I use a Pawfit pet tracker?). Confirm current GBP plan rates on Pawfit's support/subscription pages when you activate.

Best mainstream dog GPS

Tractive Smart Dog Tracker (DOG 6, Mint)

  • Live GPS
  • Virtual fences
  • Health/activity features per plan
  • Subscription required

Tractive's current mainstream dog tracker line. Manufacturer guidance points to dogs from roughly 4 kg for the standard DOG 6 size. Confirm colour/clip accessories and the subscription tier you need (local UK use vs travel features) before buying.

Best for bigger dogs

Tractive XL Smart Dog Tracker (DOG 6 XL)

  • Larger XL form factor
  • Live GPS
  • Subscription required

Choose XL when your dog is in the larger size band Tractive describes for DOG 6 XL (manufacturer material points to large breeds above about 20 kg). Bigger hardware is not automatically "better" for a small dog – match the model to weight and collar real-estate.

Best non-Tractive option on this list

Pawfit 3 GPS Pet Tracker

  • 4G/LTE-M GPS
  • App alerts
  • Waterproof claim per listing
  • Subscription required

A cellular GPS alternative with its own app and subscription. Pawfit documents multi-region network support for Pawfit 3 including the UK. Verify collar fit, charging routine and current plan pricing on Pawfit's site when you activate.

Gaps and cautions

  • Cat GPS on Amazon UK: Tractive's cat models exist, but the live Amazon UK ratings snapshot we used for selection did not clear our internal bar at check time. Prefer manufacturer sizing (from ~3 kg) over any "one size fits all kitten" claim.
  • Health metrics on GPS collars are wellness signals, not a diagnosis. Unusual readings are a prompt to observe your pet and speak to a vet if needed.
  • Fit matters: a tracker that spins, chafes or hangs too low can injure or get lost. Follow the brand's mounting instructions.
